Webinar Minutes: Curriculum Design (05/17/2023)

On May 17, 2023, from 19:00 to 21:00, the SSI-L project team held a webinar via Tencent Meeting, discussed the curriculum design in partner schools, and exchanged problems encountered in the project research. The Project Office and the teachers from the project teams of four partner schools participated in the webinar. Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project Team and director of the Science Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality, Meng Linghong, associate professor of the School of Mathematics and Science Education at Beijing Institute of Education, and Luo Chengji, lecturer of the School of Education of Taiyuan Normal University, attended the meeting and provided comments and guidance.

Introduction to the curriculum design

Yang Fanfan, a teacher from the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, on behalf of the school project team, shared the SSI-L curriculum “How to achieve carbon neutrality on the school campus”, introducing the research background of the issue from the perspectives of global, national, city, and school, and present research status, also demonstrated the star chart of the SSI teaching framework from the perspectives of policy, science, economy, humanities, and environment, and introduced the conceptual design of the seven activities from four main aspects: understanding the issue scientifically, seeking evidence to support the arguments, weighing the pros and cons to make decisions, elaboration on the design. Zhang Hui and Han Lixin, teachers from the project team of the Second High School Attached to BNU, further elaborated on the content of the activity design and achievements of the project.

Discussion among partner schools

Around this case, a heated discussion unfolded among the partner school teachers and the Project Office team members, and focused on the following aspects: first, how to optimize the debate issues; second, how to further focus on the campus site to stimulate students’ interests and attention; and third, how to further sort out the curriculum logic and point to the final model design task. Lin Jing, Meng Linghong, and Luo Chengji all affirmed the issue selection and activity design, and provided guidance and suggestions.

At the end of the meeting, participants exchanged views on the problems encountered by the partner schools in the progress of the project, mainly discussing how to carry out the design of learning tasks based on assessment and the research methods to be noted when guiding students to conduct field research, how to collect data with research questions, etc.

The case-based webinar effectively promoted the joint progress of the project team, providing a mutually supportive platform with professional guidance for the four partner schools’ SSI-L research and practice.
