The Successful Closure of the SSI-L Project Seminar at Yuxin School Attached to Capital Normal University (06/29/2023)

On the morning of June 29, 2023, the SSI-L Cooperation and Research Project Seminar at Yuxin School Attached to Capital Normal University was held in the library conference room of the Middle School Department. Peng Menghua, head of the Disciplinary Guidance Expert Team of the SSI-L Project and a Special-Rank Teacher of the Physics Department of the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, Zhu Yujun, project disciplinary guidance expert, full-time deputy editor-in-chief and director of the editorial department of Chinese Journal of Chemical Education at Beijing Normal University attended the meeting. They discussed and guided how to improve the implementation and plan of the curriculum project on “Why Middle School Students Shouldn’t Drink Alcohol – The Origin, Consumption, and Regulation of Alcohol” with members of the 7th grade project team at Yuxin.

The meeting started with a discussion on “How to implement a ‘final lesson’ with high quality” proposed by Director Cao Xuelong, the project leader. Mr. Zhu Yujun offered suggestions based on the design and ideas from the project members. He believed that the final lesson must serve as a finishing touch, which could start with a review of the previous content, and go back to the issue, asking students to think why middle school students cannot drink alcohol, and then extend themselves to others, to the country, to society and even to the world, in order to develop students’ “scientific thinking” and enhance their “sense of responsibility” required by the core competencies. The panel also suggested that the lesson could be concluded with explicit assignments to show students’ learning achievements, such as drawing posters, conducting speeches under the national flag, recording micro-lessons and writing essays, so that more students could benefit from the curriculum.

Afterwards, participants further discussed the modification and improvement of the curriculum plan. Based on the existing elementary framework, experts gave guidance on the details of the curriculum plan, such as “learning content”, “learning objectives”, “learning evaluations” and “specific learning activities”. The experts suggested that in the process of composing a curriculum plan, it is necessary to firmly hold the concept of “students are  the main subject of learning”, to think and design activities from the students’ perspective. At the same time, the curriculum design and prepared resources must be supported by evidence, which requires the school project team to search for professional materials and organize literature when preparing lessons and composing curriculum plans. In addition, aiming to better reproduce the lesson in written form, the agenda should include a “lesson notes” section, so that the entire lesson can be fully documented for subsequent review and continuous improvement.

After a morning of discussion, the project team members generated new thoughts and revision ideas for their respective courses. Everyone hoped to improve the curriculum plan continuously through seminars, providing better curriculum content for Yuxin students.
