Weekly work report of the Xieying Program of SSI-L Project (20231023~20231105)

From October 23 to November 5, 2023, the Beijing Normal University Socio-Scientific Issues Learning Project office carried out a series of teaching and research activities, such as collective course preparation, classroom observations, and after-class discussions, in two partner schools of the BNU Basic Education Development and Management Department’s Xieying Program — the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University and the Asia-Pacific Experimental School of BNU. On October 27, 2023, the project office organized these two partner schools and high school students from the Second High School Attached to BNU visited the State Key Laboratory of Surface Processes and Resource Ecology at BNU.

Lin Jing, the head of the SSI-L project, led the team to conduct discussions and course preparations. Teachers from the partner schools successfully organized students to implement group cooperative learning and guided students to make scientific argumentations. Post-graduate students from the laboratory joined the class, together with members of the project office. They captured and recorded students’ pre-scientific concepts exposed in argumentations, and supported the research team in discussing how to promote students’ conceptual change.

During the lab visit, several researchers from the laboratory offered science popularization education for primary and secondary school students in a simple and easy-to-understand manner, based on the course content of Global Warming and students’ cognitive characteristics at primary and secondary school levels. They helped students understand that climate change research is a major scientific issue critical to the security of the entire earth system and the destiny of mankind. Protecting our earth and achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality is the only way to achieve sustainable development of mankind and the earth. The steady implementation of various seminar activities and visits to the State Key Laboratory have promoted the continuous progress of project research.
