On February 23, 2024, the Xieying Program of the Beijing Normal University Socioscientific Issues-based Learning Project held its offline course preparation meeting at BNU. Members of the project office and teachers from two partner schools participated in this meeting. Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project Team and director of the Science Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal University, attended the meeting. Participants discussed the new semester course implementation plans, off-campus practice activities, and how to write journal articles and refine research findings.

At the beginning of the meeting, Lin Jing analyzed the overall course structure for the new semester. She focused on explaining the teaching objectives of cultivating scientific thinking and scientific practice abilities that the courses point to. Teachers from two partner schools discussed the new semester course implementation plans based on the progress of their own school curriculum. Participants held further discussions.

Then the team members made plans on the relevant content of students’ off-campus practice activities in the new semester, and initially arranged the activity site, relevant personnel involved and other matters. Finally, Lin Jing offered guidance on how to write journal articles based on the annual meeting report, pointing out that teachers need to further refine the main idea, focus on the theme, make arguments to support the main idea, and organize evidence to demonstrate arguments.

The offline course preparation meeting has facilitated the research work on SSI-L teaching and learning implementation for the new semester, and contributed to the layout and refinement of research findings.
