[SSI Learning]
Minutes of the tenth cloud salon: Li Qiaohong’s understanding of academic publications (03/31/2021)

At 7:30-9:00 of March 31, 2021, SSL Learning Project group of Beijing Normal University held a cloud salon in Tencent Conference Room. Director of the editors’ office of Education & Equipment Research, Li Qiaohong was invited to talk about academic paper’s writing and submission. The following is the major content of the salon for your reference.

Director Li emphasized that the most important thing in writing a paper is to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and to write from the perspective of editors and readers, which can increase the chance of publication. In writing the main body, it is necessary to pay attention to the following five points: choose a topic from a macro point of view, but write it from a micro point of view (big idea but breaking the points into small ones). The idea should be based on the problem and can be used for reference (talk about your own methods and reasons), and the content organization should focus on the key points (remember not to blindly use all the data during the process in order to focus, not to emphasize the unnecessary parts such as the research values and difficulties in large spaces). In narrative, it should be reasonable and logical (major argument should be supported by literature evidence). The structure should be reasonable and detailed.

Director Li recommended two frameworks commonly seen in the papers: for introductions to curriculum series, the main body should include a background, design principles, curriculum system (a detailed explanation of how the system reflects the design principles), and effect analysis. For papers for specific teaching design, the main body should include a background, design thinking, and teaching practice (a detailed explanation of how the practice reflects the design thinking), and effect analysis. In each structure, the introduction to curriculum system and teaching practice should account for the highest proportion, followed by design principles, design thinking, and effect analysis. The background should be as concise as possible.

Director Li emphasized that the content of the paper should adhere to this concept: the space of journal layout is limited, so the paper should be full of information, showing the most with the least amount of space. If a chart is used, sequential numbers should be given. Citations in the main body should use number references, and words or phrases like “below” or “table on the left” should not be adopted. The graphs should highlight the key points, and irrelevant background information should be deleted (for example, the graph to show the instrument should be white bottom, and no irrelevant parts such as figures should be shown. The data diagram should not include a software interface). The layout of the table should not be more than one page. Compared to texts, graphs take up more space. Therefore, if unnecessary, texts are preferred. For the texts in the main body, the following four points should be noted: text specifications (no grammatical error, typo, colloquialism, or Internet buzzword should be used); concise (no repetitive or irrelevant content); objective and rational (no overuse of rhetoric, less emotional or absolute expression in the texts); the vocabulary in the paper should be united (after abbreviate a long name, do not use the full name any more; one should be used when multiple synonyms appear; subtitles should be made based on the unit of the curriculum or the teaching flow process).

In addition to the main body, there are other major elements of a paper. A qualified paper should include all the elements. The title is the first element for editors to determine the value of the paper, which is also the important basis for readers to do a literature search. The title should be precise, academic and suitable in length. The summary is a major part for editors to further understand the paper, requiring objective and concise content, and the introduction to the writing background and core content (research purpose, method, result and conclusion). Non-textual contents like annotations or charts should be used. It should be written in the tone of the editor or a third person. The summary and the main body are independent to each other, so the summary should repeat the major content of the paper. The references are an important part of an academic paper, providing academic clues that assist in writing. The references should be formatted.

In terms of paper submission, Director Li believes that the following points need to be concerned. First, comprehensively consider the topic of the paper, the audience and column of the journal, and your requirement for the timeline and journal titles before you choose the journal. Next, add or delete content according to the journal requirements (for example, add an English title, a summary, keywords and author introduction), format adjustment (formats of the subtitles and references), content adjustment (do not mention other similar journals, quote the articles of the journal appropriately but do not quote your own articles too many times). Search the submission channels through the cover, bottom, copyright page or Call for Papers of the recent paper journals, or search the submission channels online (be careful when using baidu.com to avoid using fake channels. It is suggested to find the submission button on the relevant journals in CNKI, or find the submission channel on the official website of the journal). Note: Verify the authenticity of the submission channel (for example, through the official website of the journal or the organizer, the WeChat public account of the journal, email or telephone).

Finally, Director Li took two papers as an example to introduce to everyone the Education & Equipment Research. The journal is mainly to promote the integration of education and equipment research. On one hand, it publishes papers on teaching (experimental teaching, education on the hard-working spirit, maker education, and project-based teaching); on the other hand, it publishes papers on equipment research (laboratories, libraries, innovative laboratories, instruments, the application of new technology and equipment in education, etc.). The journal hopes that papers should not present the dialogues between students and teachers, as well as the event photos, but show how to achieve curriculum and teaching design, the design concept and design thinking. You can find out the requirements of the journal through reading the relevant topics of the targeted journal. Director Li encouraged everyone to read more journals, which is instrumental not only in revising the paper, but also in personal growth.
