The Successful Closure of the SSI-L Project Seminar at Hangzhou Baochuta Experimental School (05/19/2023)

To explore the design and implementation of SSI-L, enhance teachers’ interdisciplinary teaching ability, and optimize the school’s “Keep Realistic Green” extended curriculum, on May 19, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., an SSI-L Cooperation and Research Project Seminar was held in the reception room on the first floor of the school’s complex building. Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project Team and director of the Science Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality, and Peng Menghua, leader of the SSI-L project subject guidance expert team, and a Special-Rank teacher of the Physics Department of the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University attended the seminar. Yang Fengyou, project consultant of Hangzhou Baochuta Experimental School, Yu Yuan, project leader of the school, and members of the project team gave presentations and introductions on the school’s curriculum design.

Yu Yuan, on behalf of the team, reported on the design and implementation of the three issues “water purification,” “global warming,” and “disposable chopsticks” and expressed thoughts and confusion regarding the implementation of the three issues, expecting to start a discussion from the framework, logical sequence, intent, and other related aspects.

Comments and guidance from Peng Menghua

First, Peng Menghua spoke highly of the value of the issues. Taking “water purification” as an example, he believed that the open question of “What kind of water would be healthy to drink” was worthy of students’ deep thinking which was conducive to helping students make rational judgments in science-related situations in their daily life. Meanwhile, he proposed modifications on the detailed design of the reverse osmosis membrane of the water purifier in the project and affirmed the practical way the project used to improve students’ sense of achievement.

Comments and guidance from Lin Jing

Lin Jing first confirmed the smooth and continuous implementation of SSI-L during the pandemic. She then indicated that under the current examination and evaluation system, the research should still be focus on the implementation and evaluation of core competencies. The purpose of researching and implementing SSI-L is not to solve the issue itself, but to use the issue as a carrier to develop students’ thinking and problem-solving skills. Lin Jing went on to propose suggestions for the future design and implementation of the SSI-L project. She suggested leveraging the issue of “water purification” to help schools deepen the quality reform, create the SSI-L curriculum “beauty from water” with Hangzhou characteristics, and integrate it with urban planning and other related designs to explore deeper social value. In addition, she suggested that video recordings of every lesson should be reserved, to observe and review students’ performances in class, helping optimize SSI-L teaching design.

Lecture by Peng Menghua

After that, Peng Menghua delivered a lecture on the theme of “Innovative experiments–cultivating students’ comprehensive qualities.” He used various teaching cases, such as designing Faraday generators and animal repellers , making craft rocket models, and Newton tubes, demonstrating the working principle of IC cards, and creation of interesting electric guitars and erhus, to increase students’ interest in learning, cultivating their scientific spirit, exercise their thinking ability, and enhance their interdisciplinary practical ability. This lecture aroused unanimous praise from the teachers present.

At the end of the meeting, Yang Fengyou expressed his earnest expectations for further in-depth collaboration with the two experts. With their guidance and help, he strived to further deepen the design and implementation of the issues to form a distinctive and systematic SSI curriculum resource in Hangzhou Baochuta Experimental School.
