If the teacher can step back rationally and gracefully,
the students will move forward intelligently and bravely.
Such seeming understatement of “transformation”actually embodies the wisdom, exploration, practice and reflection of education.
Teacher Dong Yanping perfectly presented this exchange class. Her success owed to the great cooperation between the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. The two co-sponsored Social Scientific Issue Learning (SSI-L) project, under which, partner schools can conduct researches around complex social issues that are closely related to science and technology. Fortunately, our school is among the first 37 partner schools in China, and co-organized this seminar about the design and implementation of SSI-L with Hangzhou Basic Education Teaching and Research Office.
This seminar was held both online and offline. Teachers from partner schools, as well as persons engaged in education, all participated in this meeting, working together on the SSI-L. At the meeting, Xue Xiaofeng and Jiang Wanzhen, teachers from Ruian Affiliated School of Beijing Foreign Studies University, also shared their wonderful reports and presented excellent classes.
On the way of education,
we will strive forward with the profession as the guidance
What motivates us to unswervingly walk on the new path of educational development is the continuous support from professional fields. Since the establishment of the SSI-L project in our school, we have participated for many times in the national SSI-L online seminars, initiated by Lin Jing, director of the Science Education Quality Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal University, and have exchanged ideas with and been inspired by experts and teachers from all partner schools.
This seminar gave us valuable opportunities for face-to-face exchanges. At the seminar, research experts powered us with education theories, and instructed us on how to put them into teaching practice. Professor Lin Jing and Professor Dong Yan gave an in-depth analysis of what the main points are in SSI-L practice, and how to effectively integrate SSI-Learning and project-based teaching mode.
Special Report: Key Points for the Design and Implementation of SSI-L
In the report, professor Lin pointed out that SSI-L design includes the following key points:
1. Centered around the social scientific issues, we should build an interdisciplinary integrated learning framework from the five dimensions of science, culture, politics, economy, and morality.
2. Evidence-driven SKC-CAT Model;
3. A project-based learning path with students as the center
In the implementation process, we should pay attention to linking with reality to highlight the value of interdisciplinary integrated learning. We should keep recording, reflecting, and refining the practical process, creating an open class to help develop students’ ability.
Special Report, Design of SSI-Integrated Interdisciplinary Project-based Learning
Professor Dong combines SSI teaching concepts with PBL teaching mode, summarizing a very “1+7” mode of PBL.
One core: to find solutions based on evidence.
Two elements: key knowledge; skills to succeed.
Three learning guides: problem-driving orientation; support-seeking orientation; rules-assessing orientation.
Four promotions: real situation; respect for autonomy; reflection guidance; product generation.
In addition, the experts conducted a special salon in response to teachers’ puzzles in their daily teaching. In a free atmosphere, attendees exchanged ideas and inspired each other in terms of teaching mindset.
Peng Menghua, the leader of the advising experts group of Science Alliance, a special-grade physics teacher in the Second Affiliated Middle School of Beijing Normal University, and the science consultant of “I Love Invention” of CCTV 10 (a science and education channel).
Jin Jingsheng, science education researcher of Hangzhou, and regional leader of SSI-L in Zhejiang.
Chen Cangpeng, special-grade teacher of Hangzhou Thirteenth Middle School Education Group.
Wu Qingqing, principal and special-grade teacher of Hangzhou Shangsi Middle School.
It’s easy to know but difficult to do
We will keep reflecting as move forward
When we have a dream, we need to make it come true. With practical advice from experts, we could step forward more steadily and firmly. Along the way, the SSI-L team of our school has experienced a lot. Since its establishment, the team has received attention from leaders of all levels. Principal Sha Liguo and Vice-Principal Huang Chenghui took the command in person. Coordinated by teaching and research team leaders from our two branch schools, we have now recruited 15 backbone teachers in total and 10 have participated in developing the first social scientific issues. In practice, we have moments of happiness and joy, as well as slight uneasiness and confusion. But as we progress, everything is becoming clearer and clearer, and we are more determined on the new path.
Be diligent in learning to be good at something
Develop literacy and strengthen morality education to foster talents
We hope that our students in SSI-Learning could grow into good teenagers with critical thinking, team spirit and inquiry ability, and hope our teachers in SSI teaching can have new models, new strategies and new concepts.
