On the afternoon of November 14, 2023, the Beijing Normal University Socio-Scientific Issues Learning Project office and the Yuxin School Attached to Capital Normal University jointly held an SSI-L collaborative research seminar in the conference room of the Middle School Department Library. Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project Team and director of the Science Education Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal University, attended the meeting. She discussed about the positioning of “controversial points” of SSI and the high-quality curriculum implementation with Tang Feng, director of the curriculum center of Yuxin School Attached to CNU, Cao Xuelong, director of the grade department, and teachers from the eighth-grade project team.
At the beginning of the meeting, director Tang Feng presented the school’s recently revised curriculum plan, and elaborated in focus their latest thoughts on the change of SSI title from “Why can’t middle school students drink alcohol? – The origin, drinking and supervision of alcohol” to “Shall I drink alcohol? –Why can’t middle school students drink alcohol?”
Lin Jing pointed out that the school’s issue focused on middle school students and overemphasized the research on the harm of alcohol, which could not well reflect the controversial nature of SSI. She suggested to think over questions of “Why can’t middle school students drink alcohol? Can they drink after the age of 18? What should they do when they have to drink as adults?”
Teachers from the partner school also exchanged with experts on the latest activity design plans. They proposed using drunk driving as an example, and adopting new forms of the “guess what” game and drama shows to allow students to deeply feel the impact of alcohol on the human body. Lin Jing affirmed the effects of these teaching forms in mobilizing students’ enthusiasm. She also stressed that teaching design should pay more attention to students’ understanding of science, and proposed more diverse teaching forms such as videos, simulations, alcohol testing, and experiments.
After two hours of discussion, members of the project team reached a consensus that primary and secondary school students are in a critical period of brain development and must avoid drinking alcohol. To help students foster rational understanding of drinking, the SSI should unfold with a focus on scientific issues, such as what alcohol is, how alcohol is produced, and the impact of alcohol on our body. As for the future drinking behavior in adulthood, which is closely related to living habits, pressure and social environment, students can be asked to discuss around the cultural, economic, social, and other aspects. This could help students understand why the government does not ban alcohol completely, and choose a healthy lifestyle based on a reasonable understanding of alcohol. In addition, the SSI title can be revised to “How do middle school students understand alcohol and drinking behavior rationally”.
