On the evening of September 13, 2021, a seminar on topic selection for BNU SSI-L Project Regional Experimental School Alliance (Shandong-Liaoning-Heilongjiang-Guizhou) was held online via the Tencent Conference Room. Chaired by Cui Wenhao, Secretary General of the Alliance and Director of Weihai Shichang Middle School, the seminar was attended by more than 20 people in total, including Zhang Tao, Director of the SSI Project of Shandong, Professor Yang Jun of Guizhou Normal University, and principals from alliance schools, project leaders and experimental school teachers. It was held in two stages. The first stage was the experimental school’s report on topic selection, with feedback from other schools, and the second stage was the experts giving comments and suggestions.

Yu Shu Ling, Director of Weihai Nanhai New Area Experimental School, reported on her school’s unchanged topic of this semester, namely, “Is the Decrease of Xiaoguan Clams Related to the Development of Nanhai New Area?” She hoped that based on the research in the previous semester, this topic could be further developed and carried out in an orderly manner. The teacher of Weihai Shichang Middle School commented on this topic and affirmed the continuity of the research.

Tang Rui from Guiyang No.1 Experimental Middle School said that they would continue to push forward the original topic in the new semester, i.e., “Development and Protection of the Karst Caves in Shierbeihou Tourist Area”, hoping to integrate the contents of the topic into the curriculum of biology, geography, physics and chemistry by grade level, so as to develop students’ cognition in an upward spiral. The teacher of Rongcheng Fuxin Primary School commented on the selection of this topic and affirmed the school’s multidisciplinary approach.

Jiang Qianqian from Weihai Shichang Middle School said that they would continue to develop a series of topics on the ocean, and initiated the following topics as the direction of choice: the Current Situation of Marine Mining Industry: the Exploitation of Marine Oil and Gas Resources; the Development of Marine Pharmaceuticals; the Construction of Undersea Tunnels and Cross-sea Bridges; the Development of Marine Pastures; Desalination of Seawater; and the Incineration of Marine Waste for Power Generation. The teacher of Weihai Qianshan Road Primary School commented on the systematic nature of the topics chosen by Shichang Middle School.

Xi Aijun from Rongcheng Fuxin Primary School introduced their topic on “Exploration on the Rationality of the Design and Use of Landscape Light in Rongcheng City” for this semester, which would be carried out from five aspects: science, safety, economy, environment and policy. The teacher of Harbin Jihong Primary School made suggestions on the controversial aspects of the topic, while giving full recognition to the topic.

Xu Lianchao, Director of Weihai Qianshan Road Primary School reflected on the development of the topic last semester, and then introduced a new topic to be developed this semester, i.e., “Pros and Cons of Using Chemical Fertilizer”. The teacher of Wanghaiyuan Middle School suggested that a study could be conducted comparing chemical fertilizers with grass ash, natural minerals, microbial fermentation and other fertilizers.

He Yinghong from Harbin Jihong Elementary School said that they would continue to complete the ice and snow topic of last semester from November this year, and would also start a new topic – “How to Develop the Ice and Snow Culture in Harbin Under the Global Warming Environment?”. The teacher from Weihai Nanhai New Area Experimental School affirmed the regional characteristics of the topic and put forward suggestions on the controversial points of the topic.

Qiao Ranjie from Weihai Wanghaiyuan Middle School introduced their new topic for this semester, “What Do You Think Is the Best Solution for Rational Disposal of Used Clothes?” , and asked for advice on the scientific aspects of this topic from the attendants. The teacher of Guiyang No.1 Experimental Middle School commented on the topic.

After the exchange and discussion among different schools, Professor Yang Jun of Guizhou Normal University talked about her feelings of attending this seminar. She fully affirmed the improvement of each school’s understanding and design of the project, made targeted guidance to each school’s work, and put forward comprehensive opinions on the topic selection. While giving full recognition, Professor Yang also made the following comments: the design of topics should take into account the connection between the inside and the outside of the classroom; the selection of topics should consider the impact of the controversial nature of the topics on the development of subsequent activities; SSI projects should reflect more integrated applications of disciplines; the design of activities can be considered adding more discursive content to provoke students’ critical thinking from different angles, such as debate, argumentative teaching, etc.; attention should be paid to the impact of topics on students’ ethical and moral views.

Finally, Director Zhang Tao made five comments on this seminar. First, he shared the same feeling as Professor Yang Jun in this seminar and affirmed the great progress made by the experimental schools in project understanding and topic selection; second, he commented on the topic of each experimental school, pointed out the problems and made suggestions for improvement; third, he put forward several principles for selecting socio-scientific topics; fourth, he raised the principles for the direction of each school’s topic selection and the requirement of making fine SSI project in this semester.

The seminar improved the level of topic selection of each experimental school and laid a good foundation for the future SSI project in this semester.
