On the afternoon of September 6, 2023, the Second High School Attached to BNU held an offline Socio-Scientific Issues Learning (SSI-L) Project seminar in Conference Room 518 of the Boxue Building. Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project Team and director of the Science Development Department of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal, Peng Menghua, head of the Disciplinary Guidance Expert Team of the SSI-L Project, the Project Office team members, and members of the SSI-L Teachers Club attended this meeting. The meeting was chaired by Han Lixin from the Physics Team of the Senior High School Department at the Second High School Attached to BNU.
At the beginning of the meeting, Han Lixin first introduced some adjustments to the school’s project based on suggestions from the project team members provided during the summer holiday webinar, including the change of project title to “Low Carbon Campus Action Guide — Taking the Second High School Attached to BNU as an Example”, as well as data collection, modeling calculations, etc.
Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L Project, affirmed those modifications and suggested that the team should select a few classes to conduct pre-tests before project implementation, and it is best to have a control class for references. Teachers could record videos in class with some devices, or directly use the school’s recording classroom to facilitate subsequent observation and analysis.
The BNU project team can also provide some resources. For instance, the team can contact senior professors from Beijing Normal University to offer science popularization lectures for students, provide relevant platforms for students and teachers, and open up laboratories for students to visit and study, etc.
In addition, regarding the content of project research, Lin Jing suggested that the research content should be closer to students, such as asking them to describe carbon footprints in everyday life. The scientific modelling part can also be clearer, which might be studied and discussed in future seminars. Attention should be paid to interdisciplinary knowledge and the clarification of the knowledge graph.
At the end of the meeting, all participants had a more detailed discussion on the curriculum implementation process and format of the SSI-L project.
