On November 9, 2024, the Symposium on Socio-Scientific Issues Case Review, hosted by the Socio-Scientific Issues Learning (SSI-L) project team at Beijing Normal University, was successfully convened. The hybrid event, combining online and in-person participation, was chaired by Lin Jing, head of the SSI-L project and director of the Science Enhancement Division at the Collaborative Innovation Center of Assessment for Basic Education Quality at Beijing Normal University. The symposium gathered disciplinary guidance experts and members of the project’s research team to engage in this academic discussion.
At the beginning of the meeting, Lin Jing led attendees in discussing the preparation work for the upcoming 2024 Annual Academic Conference, scheduled for mid-December. Both online and in-person disciplinary guidance experts actively participated, sharing valuable insights and suggestions to ensure the success of the conference. Lin Jing warmly invited the expert team to actively work together to host the annual academic conference, jointly build a high-quality platform for sharing wisdom, promote the deep collision and integration of academic ideas, and help propel research into socio-scientific issues toward greater depth and breadth.
Following that, the in-person experts focused on reviewing case studies related to socio-scientific issues. Over the course of the day, the experts conducted a rigorous and meticulous evaluation of SSI-L cases submitted from across the nation. Using scientific, objective, and comprehensive assessment criteria, the experts examined the cases from multiple dimensions, including scientific accuracy of course content, innovativeness of teaching methods, depth of integration of socio-scientific issues, and effectiveness in fostering student competencies. After thorough analysis and extensive discussion, the experts provided highly constructive and insightful feedback. The project office compiled these valuable suggestions and relayed them to the submitting institutions, helping them refine and enhance the quality of their cases.
The successful convening of this symposium not only provided robust support for the research and practice of “Socio-Scientific Issues Learning”, but also laid a solid foundation for promoting exemplary cases at the 2024 Annual Conference and gaining further publicity. Ultimately, the value of exemplary cases will be fully explored and disseminated, offering references and inspiration for more education practitioners. This will help the Socio-Scientific Issues Learning project flourish, taking root and yielding fruitful results across a broader educational landscape.
